Ask the Doctor

Skin conveys a sense of overall health and beauty to others. It has an important function based on the need for individuals to see and interact with one another in day to day life. Studies have revealed that individuals with chronic skin diseases such as eczema, psoriasis and vitiligo have associated depression and anxiety and subsequently poorer quality of life. Having a skin condition affects the way one perceives themselves, hence there is a lot to be said about achieving and maintaining good and healthy skin.

The skin is the largest organ in the body and has the important function of acting as a barrier to protect us from mechanical injury, microorganisms, chemicals and the environment.

Water hardness has been linked to several skin conditions including eczema or atopic dermatitis. Eczema is a common non-contagious condition where the skin is dry, sensitive and itchy. It commonly occurs in childhood and can also occur in adults. As we age, our skin barrier is not as able to retain and replenish moisture. Exposure to hard water is thought to be a risk factor for eczema.

Genetics cannot be changed, but you can certainly take measures to protect and maintain your skin by starting off with something as simple as ensuring you have soft water at home.
